About
United Kenyans of Chicago NFP (UKC) is a nonpartisan organization that serves as the voice of the Kenyan community in Illinois, with the purpose of fostering soci0-economic and civic empowerment and positive development linkages between Illinois and Kenya.
Rationale for UKC
The journey to form UKC began in the Fall of 2002 when a small group from the growing Kenyan resident community in Chicago, some of whom had lived in the United States for a long time, saw the need for the following:
- An inclusive voice to lead the participation of the Illinois Kenyan Diaspora in responding to and shaping issues and events that affected the community
- A point of connection for a geographically dispersed, but numerically significant community
- Access to relevant human and social services for new immigrants
- Participation in the US fabric of communities by sharing the Kenyan immigrant experience and the provision of culturally relevant grounding for a new generation of Kenyan-American youth
- The promotion of educational, cultural and business linkages between Illinois and Kenya as a goodwill ambassador.
Out of this UKC was born on March 10th 2003 as a non-profit organization in Illinois.
