Kenya Expo and Independence Day
The celebration of Kenya’s Independence Day in 2009 was held at the UKC office building on December. The event centered around a Kenya Expo, whose aim was to showcase initiatives by Kenyans and Friends of Kenya in Illinois aimed at promoting Kenya’s development or profile through various development projects.
The Embassy of Kenya was represented at this event by Mr. G.P. Mwita, 2nd Secretary Economic Affairs. Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley issued a Kenya Independence Day proclamation, which was read and presented by Mr. Arnold Romeo – Director of African Affairs at the City of Chicago Commission on Human Relations.
The Expo featured exhibits by: The Field Museum, The City of Dixon Sister Cities Association (Dixon-Thika), Mombasa Relief Initiative, Monaco Youth Group, East African Cultural Organisation (EACO-USA), Women’s Global Education Project, African Digital Art, Matanya’s Hope, and the Chicago Marathon Kenya Support Team, among others.
This event was also a family affair that featured a “kids room” with various activities and games. Kenya Airways also supported the event through prizes.
A taste of Kenyan and East African cuisine was provided by Klaypot Catering, Pikeni na Sisi Cooking Club, and the East African Cutural Organisation (EACO-USA).
